thesouthmeetsthemidwest asked: I'm a sophomore in undergrad, and I recently joined a research study and I'm also teaching mental health at Chicago Public Schools. I am doing a lot in my research (not just data entry but working with the people as well) so I am hoping to do a poster by my Junior year. I'm also taking some pretty tough classes right now and 3/4 are psych classes. I have never gotten below an A in a...
Anonymous asked: Well, I am the person that asked the question about the Clinical Psychology Research master. I don't know how to send you a message, so I am writing in the "asking" section. I thank you a lot, your reply was like a torch in the darkness! I have talked and asked around to find a solution for my distress related to my letter of motivation, but nobody gave me a better response than you...
Anonymous asked: Hello,I am currently applying for a research master in Clinical Psy. Paradoxically,I don't know what will become of my career and 'cause of this I find it difficult to write my letter of motivation I know I should not be as shallow as to use reasons such as "I want to apply 'cause I love helping people,or because I care about persons with disabilities".I am choosing a...

I AM NOT A DOCTOR
Even when I get my PhD, I will be a Doctor of Clinical Psychology, not a Psychiatrist or any other kind of Medical Doctor. I cannot ethically answer questions about prescriptions, so please don’t come to me for that kind of help.
I understand things are hard for a lot of people, and I empathize with those situations, but I’m not the resource for that kind of help.
Take care, followers.
And...

Anonymous asked: What are the psychological/physiological consequences of abusing substances like adderal and vyvanse, besides addiction? I've researched a bit myself, and I am fully aware that it is illegal and whatnot, but if I'm behind in work or particularly anxious about an upcoming test, I'll take vyvanse to get everything done because I need to be efficient with my time by any means...

propophol-deactivated20130328 asked: Hey! I'm diagnosed with Borderline and recovering from Anorexia and I decided to make this tumblr as some kind of diary/scrapbook/whatever. I'm open for every kind of questions and advice asks, but you can also just send me your stories or problems, so I just wanted to ask you if you could publish it to your followers/readers! I thought it would be a good idea to let people look into the...

Anonymous asked: To your knowledge, do most graduate schools (for clinical psychology) require that a thesis was done in undergrad? If so, is there a preference towards a thesis that is worth more credits?

Anonymous asked: Ever since I became a teenager (~ a decade ago), I've felt like I wouldn't be allowed to wear the clothes I want, hug people without it being incredibly awkward, or cheer out loud in public/express my emotions at all really, unless I were a girl. But, I don't necessarily want to be a girl, I just feel like if I acted like my true inner self, as a guy, everyone would hate me....

insideafire asked: Hi, I'm a high school student and I was wondering if you could give me some pointers to enter the psychology field? I'm leaning more towards social/personality psychology or sociology depending on which I can get into. I'm starting my senior year 2013 and I'm taking the only psych course my school has to offer which is inro to psych/socio, but I don't know where to go...

myresin asked: I've taken an interest in teaching psych later on. Currently, I'm about half-way done with getting my masters in Mental Health Counseling. Apparently, a lot of schools require you have at least a Ph.D or Psy.D and a year in your field before they will consider you a candidate to teach. At least, that's the schools I've looked at. I'm trying to find a position where you...

Anonymous asked: my LD is reading comprehension exclusive! i'm mostly worried about getting into a program, specifically concerning the GRE tests, the vocabulary memorization. but i'm glad to see grad school is more practical, and thanks for your words i'm feeling more reassured now :-)

Anonymous asked: psych is like the only thing that has mattered to me since junior high, and i always studied it on my own time, even. it's the only thing i'd be happy pursuing. i did really well in my AP class and got a 5 on the test, but i have a learning disorder, though i don't think it's too bad. so i was wondering whether i should bother with getting a PhD in clinical psychology? i'm...

Anonymous asked: How about if I plan on going into a Forensic Psych PsyD program? Do you think it would be better to get a masters first or just go straight into it?

Anonymous asked: For forensic psych or clinical psych, is it better to get a masters first before getting your doctorate? Or is it alright to just apply to a doctorate program at once after college? And last question, do you think it's advisable to head into grad school at once after college?

kandicepoole asked: Hello! I'm going into art therapy, and you can have either a psych degree with some art, or an art degree with some psych to get into grad school. Each art therapy graduate program is a little bit different on what they require and how they run things. But to be an art therapist you must have your graduate degree, and the accredited programs are on the AATA website.

neweroceans asked: I earned my BFA in painting, was certified and taught high school art for several years, and then went back to school and earned a MS in Counseling and Art Therapy. I'm not sure how many other dual programs exist (mine has closed), but I am grateful for it. There is registration as an art therapist through AATA (www-arttherapy-org) and now even board certification, but there is no licensure...

Anonymous asked: As for Art Therapy, you do have to have a masters and be licensed. Good place to start is searching with the requirements for your state. Where I live you have to have basic psychology intro courses, then 3 areas of studio art, then your masters in art therapy. From where I am, its kind of hard to find schools with legit programs to help get you licensed. Check out...

daibenzaiten asked: This blog is amazing. So, question time. I am currently switching from psych to art after figuring out I have no drive to work for a grad degree in psychology, write a dissertation, and no money. However, I absolutely love the field and am seriously considering going into art therapy (which requires a BFA and the equivalent of a psych minor). I've already looked into grad programs, but would...

1000splendidsuns asked: I work in a early social developmental lab and there are huge areas of research in developmental psychology currently, including autism as well as emerging childhood psychopathology and response to different types of treatment. It's definitely something I suggest going into, but more so if you are interested in research rather than practice.

wingseeker asked: To the anon with the low GPA worries. If it was due to depression, and you can get a Dr. to back it up you can likely still file for a medical drop/appeal of the semesters in question. You should ask your school to figure out your options. In mine, it is through the Registrar's office and it erases the semesters from your transcript.
legallyblindobservations asked: To the anon with the 2.7: I had a 2.6 after my first year at college. I floundered a bit due to personal issues over the next year and a half, but I finished strong with a 3.4, 3.8, and 3.6 in my last three semesters, and just got accepted to my first choice grad school program. As long as you can get back on the horse, finish strong, and do well on your tests (GREs or whatever), you should be...
Anonymous asked: I just finished my first year of undergrad, and have an uncharacteristically awful GPA (2.7) which was most likely due to a major depressive episode I experienced this year. I expect to do much better in the semesters to come, but will this year ruin my chances at getting into a decent graduate program? (I plan on going into art therapy.)

Anonymous asked: That's a point there, but it of course shoves away the more social, and holistic aspects of Psychology that are absent in Neurology.
